Game designer

A game designer is responsible for conceptualizing and designing video games.

They collaborate with a multidisciplinary team, including artists, programmers, and writers, to bring the game to life.

Depending on the specific role, the game designer creates the overall game concept, designs levels, works on character development, and balances game difficulty.

What does a Game designer do?

  • Create the overall game concept (game objective, theme, mechanics, and core features)

  • Develop and fine-tune the rules and mechanics in the gameplay

  • Craft compelling narratives and characters

  • Build and test prototypes

  • Design levels, environments, and challenges

Example of work as a Game designer

A mobile game development company has a cluster of games about arranging letters into words.

By having many similar games, they see a high download rate when they advertise their other games within a game.

They ask one of their game designers to come up with five ideas for more word games.

The game designer researches the games that already exist and identifies features and mechanisms that work well. Based on this research, she brainstorms different ideas.

She evaluates the ideas and expands on the most promising ones.

She then makes a presentation showing each idea so they can decide which ideas to move forward with.
